Background of 2009-2010 Boston Celtics

Many thought that the Boston Celtics would have repeated as champions last year if they weren’t hampered by injuries. Even with a injured and tired team full of old players that could have done with more support, the Celtics took the Magic to 7 games. This year they have made a major addition in Rasheed Wallace which should provide some great needed support to KG. Rajon Rondo’s playoff run was one for the ages and if he plays remotely like he did in the 2009 playoffs then the Boston Celtics will be absolutely stacked from top to bottom. Judging from their first practice on their training camp, the Celtics are as hungry as their first title run in 2008 and will be a leading contender for the 2010 NBA championship.

Boston Celtics Guards

It’s almost funny how 2 years ago around these days, Rajon Rondo was looked at as the major concern of whether the Celtics would be championship contenders. Today, he is their one bright emerging star amidst a bunch of supernovas ready to die off. He perhaps hasn’t developed a jump shot like everyone wanted him to, but he still remains as dominant as ever when he’s on the basketball floor, something that few point guards can ever achieve. At the shooting guard position we have Ray Allen, arguably the greatest shooter of all time. He has show signs that he is getting close to putting away his sneakers for good, but he still has a couple meaningful season left in him. Marquis Daniels is a very solid addition to this team that really needed a good versatile guard to make up for the one dimensional nature of Eddie House and Tony Allen.

Boston Celtics Forwards

Several years ago Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett were considered the two toughest players in the NBA, and they now play on the same team. You can add Paul Pierce and Glen Davis to the short list of most ferocious and diehard players in the NBA today. What you get when you put these 4 players together against the opposing forwards is that they better be ready to pick up some bruises. In playoffs, these qualities shine the hardest and was the primary reason why they beat out the Lakers so convincingly in 2008.

Boston Celtics Centers

Kendrick Perkins is a tough cookie himself and while he may not have the natural length of a center he more than makes up for it with his hustle and pure strength. Having said that, here’s an interesting stat for you: the Boston Celtics don’t have a single player 7 foot tall or taller. That is quite shocking given that this is a team that dominates the board and the paint so often. Kevin Garnett is in fact the tallest player on the team, and besides his obvious influence on the team shows how important that he remain healthy for the Boston Celtics to have long post season run – because you better believe that the road to the Finals in the Eastern conference won’t be a walk in the park.

Best Case Scenario for the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics are just as good as they were when they won the NBA championship in 2008, in fact even better. Rondo has evolved into a all-star caliber point guard, Daniels can fill the role of James Posey, and Rasheed Wallace is a huge upgrade from Leon Powe. If they stay healthy, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t win it all. They are as talented as the best, and are tougher than the rest

Worst Case Scenario for the Boston Celtics

Lack of a proper backup point guard and center coupled with the age and health of the Boston Celtics doesn’t pain a bright picture for their 2010 championship aspirations. One injury to a key player will put them out of contention.

Celtics 2010 Outlook

The Boston Celtics have what it takes to be champions, but have the disadvantage of not having any room for any injuries or sub-100% performances from their core players. They will make it through the first main opposition but will break down around the Conference Finals when age, stamina, and bench depth start to play a key role.
