Background of 2009-2010 Detroit Pistons

Last year was the first time in the decade that the Detroit Pistons didn’t manage to make the playoffs. It’s not a huge coincidence that this happened in the year that they traded away Mr. Big Shot Chauncey Billups that was so crucial to their success. Joe Dumars is regarded as somewhat of a genius GM for putting together that franchise that not only made several NBA finals appearances but also won the title. This year Dumars realized it was time to switch things up once again, and instead of waiting for that big 2010 free agency to spend their cap money, he used it up on buying 2 of the top free agents of the 2009 summer. The Pistons have added UConn duo of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villnueva as well as Ben Wallace who had his golden years playing in Detroit. The only significant loss is the real identity of the 21st century version of the Detroit Bad Boys, Rasheed Wallace. Will these changes be enough to get the Pistons back in the playoffs?

Pistons additions in 2010

Ben Gordon

Charlie Villanueva

Ben Wallace

Chris Wilcox

Pistons departures in 2010

Rasheed Wallace

Arron Affalo

Allen Iverson

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Detroit Pistons

PG – Rodney Stuckey
SG – Richard Hamilton
SF – Tayshaun Prince
PF – Charlie Villanueva
C – Kwame Brown

Detroit Pistons Guards

The Detroit Pistons have lost first Chauncey Billups and then Allen Iverson in the past year, but they still remain quite stacked at the guard positions. Rodney Stuckey is looked upon as one of the stars of the future and he will be in command of leading this team back to competitive levels. He has huge shoes to fill with Billups now gone and will be pressured to do so quite quickly with capable backup Will Bynum on his heels. Bynum has exploded on several occasions to extraordinary performances and some even proclaim that he ought to be the starter instead of Stuckey.

The shooting guard position is where the Pistons really shine. Richard Hamilton is a top notch player and consistent All-Star, and with Rasheed and Chauncey now firmly out of view, it will be on him to carry this team. Certainly one of the best backups in the league this year will be once again Ben Gordon. Unlike Iverson he’s not bothered about coming off the bench, and in fact has excelled in doing so. The problem will be late in games when both Gordon and Hamilton want to be and should be on the floor – will Gordon be used as a point guard, Hamilton as a small forward? It raises some questions on whether you really need these two similar players on the same team. A Hamilton trade would not be unexpected.

Detroit Pistons Forwards

Tayshaun Prince is the other vet left on this team from the championship days besides Rip. He is as consistent of a player you can find in the NBA, and with all these changes going around, it will be comforting for new Pistons coach John Kuester to have someone like Prince around. Prince is entering his prime and this season should look to be abit more active on the offensive end with the departure of Rasheed. Prince’s backups of Daye, Jerebko, and Summers are place fillers for now and won’t be expected to do too much.

At the power forward position the Pistons have decided to replace aging forward Rasheed Wallace with up and coming star Chalie Vilanueva. Vilanueva might be known to most casual fans for having tweeted during the half time of a basketball game, but he should make a real name for himself this season in a starting spot. In just 27 limited minutes on a poor Bucks team, Charlie averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds. He will be a fresh and strong addition to this team. Behind him will be Jason Maxiell, who in my oppinion is one of the most underrated players in the league. He’s not too unlike Paul Millsap and Brandon Bass who have gotten more attention in this offseason. Chris Wilcox has also been added to add depth to the front court, and if he ever manages to play to his potential then the Pistons will be armed to hurt people in the low block like the old days.

Detroit Pistons Centers

Kwame Brown will most probably be the starting center for the Pistons. He won’t get many minutes and its long been proven now that being selected number 1 overall pick was a huge mistake, but nevertheless he will give around 20 minutes of solid action on the defensive end. Ben Wallace returns to the Motor City after a near retirement decision, and it will be interesting to see whether in his old jersey we will also be able to see flashes of his old self.

Best Case Scenario for the Detroit Pistons

It’s not yet certain how a new coach and 2 main new players will fit in to a Detroit team that’s for so long didn’t need to change. Now that its been done, the Pistons will naturally go through a transition period and given that it doesn’t take too long for roles and systems to be established, they have a shot at the playoffs.

Worst Case Scenario for the Detroit Pistons

Some could argue that Villanueva is not much of an improvement over Wallace, and Gordon is just an unnecessary sub at the 2 spot, raising the question of how much better this team actually got. There are several Eastern conference teams like the Wizards and Raptors who have made bigger moves, and it seems like the Pistons will have to wait another year to see play beyond the month of May.

Pistons 2010 Outlook

The Pistons will take some time to ease into their new playstyle and new coach. Gordon and Hamilton being on the same team will be more of a nuissance than an asset, and the Pistons will need to make a lopsided trade or two to have a chance to mingle with the upper echelon of the Eastern conference.

Detroit Pistons 2010 Predictions

Record: 39-43

Surprise Player: Chris Wilcox being a strong reserve at the 4 and 5 spots.

Key Player: Rodney Stuckey needs to have a breakout year and be the driving force behind the resurgence of this franchise.

That wraps up the Detroit Pistons 2009-2010 season preview and our detailed look at the Pistons in the 2010 NBA season.

Background of 2009-2010 Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have made it to the playoffs only once in the past 15 years, but have gained much popularity playing a brand of Nellie Ball where every single conventional rule of basketball is broken. Last year though, their defense was the worst in the league, not only in terms of points allowed but in terms of being out-rebounded by a difference of around 5 boards per game. They also suffered alot of injuries and consequently ended up missing the playoffsby quite a maring. This year has gotten off to a rocky start with team leader and captain Stephen Jackson asking for a trade, and the Franchise player (if we can call him that) Monta Ellis making demands and negative proclamations before having even played a regular season game. The bright side is the addition of sharpshooting rookie Stephen Curry, and back to back records being set in the summer league by two up and coming players Anthony Morrow and Anthony Randolph. This will be another season full of chaos, turmoil, controversy, and above all FUN. (For the neutral fans at least)

Warriors additions in 2010

Devean George

Stephen Curry

Acie Law

Speedy Claxton

Warriors departures in 2010

Jamal Crawford

Marco Bellineli

Rob Kurz

Marcus Williams

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Golden State Warriors

PG – Monta Ellis
SG – Anthony Morrow
SF – Stephen Jackson
PF – Anthony Randolph
C – Andris Bierdins

Golden State Warriors Guards

Last season was quite tough for Golden State at the guard position. Baron Davis had left town to join the Clippers, and Monta Ellis was suspended for most of the season. This year the possibilities must be quite exciting for Don Nelson. Jamal Crawford is gone, and so is Marco Bellineli but Monta Ellis will be healthy in addition to Stephen Curry. For those who don’t follow the NCAA and have never seen Curry in action, you will be in for quite a treat when you watch him in action under a free flowing Nelson offense. Acie Law and Speedy Claxton have also been added this offseason, but they won’t see much playing time barring an injury.

Anthony Morrow is a player that alot of people will have their eyes on. Last year he led the league in 3 point FG% with 47% accuracy, and this is on a hectic Nelson offense where shot quality isn’t always at the highest. In his second years he will have to play at his top level to get take away some minutes from the sheer amount of guards on this team – currently he is projected to be the starting shooting guard but no one knows how long that will last.

Golden State Warriors Forwards

A lot of people expect Stephen Jackson to be traded in the near future, but for now he is the starting small forward for the Warriors and the main leader of an otherwise disconnected and frantic team. Kelenna Azubuike is deemed to be the main backup at the small forward position despite being only 6’5. Azubuike is strong enough to guard some small forwards, and has decent all around starts that given a S-Jax departure, should give Don Nelson some breathing room. Devean George was also acquired this summer, and will be one of the most experienced players on this team.

Correy Maggete will be the starting power forward at the beginning of the season despite a 6’6 frame and no real experience guarding opposing power forwards. But in the world of Nellie ball, that’s just a mere detail. Anthony Randolph is sure to start at the power forward position when he comes back from injury. Randolph was the talk of the Vegas Summer League when broke the record for most points in a game. But this player isn’t a one game wonder by any means, last year as a 19 year old rookie he averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds when he started games. This season many pick him to be the Most Improved Player of the Year. Ronny Turiaf will be on hand to do the dirty work and Brandan Wright is another player the Warriors will hope will turn into something great.

Golden State Warriors Centers

Andris Bierdins suffered a slight injury last year that saw him miss a month of action at a key stage of the season, but when healthy Andris Bierdins is a stat monster and an excellent fit to this young team. A perfect center in Nellie’s system should probably be able to shoot the 3 pointer, but his 60% FG percentage makes up for his lack of range. He’s also a long and agile player and if it wasn’t for his rebounding ability, the Warriors would be in an even worse rebounding deficit than they faced last year. Mikki Moore will be on the sidelines putting in limited minutes when Turiaf and Bierdins are in foul trouble.

Best Case Scenario for the Golden State Warriors

If it was any other team, I would have denied this team any chances of making the playoffs and called it a day. But in the Golden State the saying is “We Believe” and a never say never approach would be the wisest. Players like Ellis, Curry, Morrow, Randolph, Bierdins all have huge upsides and if Nelson has another spark of Genius within him left, then this team could one-up its very own biggest playoff upset ever achievement.

Worst Case Scenario for the Golden State Warriors

Too many things have to go right for the Warriors to make the playoffs, and the fact that their two main players that ought to lead this team don’t look like they can play the part. The Warriors will probably have to trade away their key piece of Stephen Jackson for something of less value and the season will go downwards from there.

Warriors 2010 Outlook

The Warriors should finish 10th in the West and be quite an arm’s reach away from the playoffs, but this won’t spell a gloom future for the young side. The Warriors are one of the youngest and potentially most skilled teams in the association. Warriors management will hope that their young players progress as expected, and then a couple of moves in the 2010 offseason could take them all the way to legit contenders in the playoffs. Sure, veterans and a solid leader would have helped speed up the process, but nothing always according to plan – especially out in Golden State. Overall, not such a bad outlook for a team who’s only made the playoffs once in the last 15 years.

Golden State Warriors 2010 Predictions

Record: 34-48

Surprise Player: Anthony Randolph and his escalation as a star in this league.

Key Player: Stephen Jackson and whether a) he plays like a leader or b) gets traded for something of value to the Warriors.

Background of 2009-2010 New York Knicks

New York is suppose to be the mecca of basketball, and each year there’s this belief out of New Yorkers that their team DESERVES to be good. I’m not entirely sure why, basketball was invented by a Canadian and the Knicks are hardly above the average NBA team when it comes to franchise playoff success. In fact, the Knicks have been more of a laughing stock over the past couple years than anything else. Last year the Knicks were seven games out of the playoffs and this year they didn’t do much to improve. Save for a 2010 arrival of LeBron James which they seem to have placed all their hopes upon, this is a team that will continue to be disappointed year after year and the Madison Square Garden will be relegated to a place where opposing superstars try to break records on how badly they can beat the Knicks.

Knicks additions in 2010

Darko Milicic

Knicks departures in 2010

Quentin Richardson

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 New York Knicks

PG – Chris Duhon
SG – Wilson Chandler
SF – Jared Jeffries
PF – Al Harrington
C – David Lee

New York Knicks Guards

The Knicks might have the weakest backcourt in the league. For a Mike D’Antoni team, this isn’t exactly a good thing. Chris Duhon is the player expected to lead the Knickerbockers again this season and after playing 37 minutes per game, we saw that there’s no real upside to him as a player. At least there is Nate Robinson coming off the bench to provide some energy to this team. Krypto-Nate had impressive numbers of 17 points and 4 assists per game last season, but Coach D’Antoni will hope that he improves on his 33% accuracy from beyond the arc.

At the shooting guard spots, the Knicks are quite a mess. Larru Hughes and Cuttino Mobley, two players well past their prime, are going to make a combined 23 million dollars this year. That’s just troubling to hear, you would have thought the Knicks would have learned to not get stuck with inflated contracts after the Allan Houston incident, but the good news is they’ve pretty much gutted their team to get rid of these contracts in time for the 2010 sweepstakes. The good news out of this is that young player Wilson Chandler will have some more room to build on a solid 14 points 5 rebounds season. Toney Douglas is another young player that should see minutes ahead of the aging dinosaurs on the team.

New York Knicks Forwards

I said the New York Knicks backcourt might be the worst in the leauge, but I really believe that the Knicks’ starting small forward, Jared Jeffries is the worst starting small forward in the league. He average 5 points and 4 rebounds last playing 24 minutes with percentages of: 44% FG, 8% 3PT, 61% FT. At least you have some upside in his reserve, with Danilo Gallinari. D’Antoni called his Italian prodige the best shooter he has ever seen, and with a 44% accuracy beyond the arc and 96% beyond the FT line, he might not be totally insane in proclaiming that. With this level of support and confidence from his fellow Italian coach, don’t be surprised to see a breakout year from Gallinari.

Al Harrington will be the main scoring option on this team, and he will yet again find a way to put 20 points on the board per night. His efficiency wasn’t where it could be last year, and with some improvements in his percentages, he can be more of a contribution to his team. His backups Marcus Landry and Chris Hunter likely won’t see many minutes.

New York Knicks Centers

It’s hard to imagine a 6’9 Center out in the East, but if one team is ready to accommodate a player like Lee, its the run-and-gun New York Knicks. David Lee is a workhorse that plays at a supremely efficient level and will give it his all night in and night out. He doesn’t need the ball often to get his 16 points per game and he will continue to dominate the offensive boards with the Knicks jacking up as many 3 points as they do. Such a small lineup will be suitable against some teams, but when facing off against the Shaqs and Howards of the league, D’Antoni will have to make use of his newest player Darko Milicic. Perhaps it will be this kind of setting that will finally give Darko the chance to prove that he is a quality player. What happens with Eddy Curry is somewhat of a mystery box, but after a 3 game season last year, it is hoped that he does SOMETHING to earn even if its a fraction of that 10 million dollars he will be paid next year.

Best Case Scenario for the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks won’t be expected to make the playoffs this year, and they really don’t have the personnel to make that kind of a push. But if anything D’Antoni has proven in his years coaching in the NBA, is that weird things can work. So if this is a reincarnation of the 7 seconds or less Suns team that was so successful, and the Knick players are able to somewhat replicate it, then a playoff spot can perhaps be a long shot.

Worst Case Scenario for the New York Knicks

More realistically though, the Knicks will stroll though another season of making their loyal fans go nuts and trying to fill in another year until that free agency of 2010 might perhaps save them out of another decade of mediocrity.

Knicks 2010 Outlook

The New York Knicks will look to improve younger players Gallineri and Milicic while hoping for better season from their vets: Harrington, Curry, and Hughes. Despite all that, the main point of talk will remain on the prize free agents of 2010, because they will be well out of any playoff contention.

New York Knicks 2010 Predictions

Record: 30-52

Surprise Player: Danilo Gallinari making a name for himself and becoming a lone source of optimism for NY fans.

Key Player: Nate Robinson and whether he can play to the level of a 6th man of the year candidate.

Background of 2009-2010 New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets finished the 2008-2009 season with a 34-48 and well beyond a playoff spot. Their main offseason move included trading away their lone superstar caliber player in Vince Carter. In exchange they got Orlando Magic’s starting backcourt in the 2009 NBA Finals. While that sounds intriguing from that perspective, it is in fact quite misleading. Courtney Lee is still a second year player not too different from the Nets’ Chris-Douglas Roberts and Rafer Alston will most likely be the Nets’ third string point guard. So with that said, there’s not all that much that Nets fans are looking for beyond this year. One thing is that alot of players are in contract years, and the team will next year be handed over to a new Russian Billionaire owner, so this young team will have to mature quick if they want to have a chance to stay with the team for an extended period of time.

Nets additions in 2010

Courtney Lee

Rafer Alston

Tony Battie

Terrence Williams

Nets departures in 2010

Vince Carter

Ryan Anderson

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 New Jersey Nets

PG – Devin Harris
SG – Courtney Lee
SF – Bobby Simmons
PF – Yi Jianlian
C – Brook Lopez

New Jersey Nets Guards

The New Jersey Nets have the quickest backcourt in the league bar none. Devin Harris last year had a phenomenal season in which he averaged 21 points and 7 assists and rightfully earned himself a spot on the Eastern Conference All Star team. The only concern is whether he can put up this kind of numbers on a consistent basis during a 82 game stretch. Last year he showed signs of fatigue towards the end of the season, and this year with the loss of Vince Carter their will be even more burden for Harris to carry this team. His new starting backcourt mate is second year guard Courtney Lee. Lee flew under the radar most of his rookie year despite playing quite amazingly well on a championship level team, and he kept this steady performance throughout the 2009 playoffs. He can run the floor, shoot the 3 with accuracy, pull up for jumpers, take it strong to the rack, and is a top level perimeter defender. Long story short he is a top level player and the Nets should be happy in having landed him.

The reserves at the point guard spots include Keyon Dooling and Rafer Alston – both previous Orlando Magic PG’s. Both of these guys are capable of being a starting level PG in this league and it seems like a waste to have all the talent on this team in the same positions. A Rafer Alston trade wouldn’t be unexpected. At the shooting guard reserve spots you have capable second year man Chris-Douglas Robets, Jarvis Hayes, and 11th pick Terrence Williams out of Louisville who all are players deserving of minutes. This amount of depth should hopefully create a competitive atmosphere allowing these players to play at the top level.

New Jersey Nets Forwards

Bobby Simmons most likely will get the start at the 3 spot, but he’s no longer the efficient player that he was once known for. Last year he average 8 points and 4 rebounds, and with the amount of depth this team has on the wings, could see his minutes limited even further. Trenton Hassel and Eduardo Najera are there for Lawrence Frank to take advantage of but all these players are on the downward cycle of their career and are better suited for being a reserve player on a talented team rather than main players on a lesser team.

The Power forward position is where the Nets are probably the thinnest with Chinese forward Yi Jianlian starting at the position. He is a an athletic player with enough skill in his game to do well in his league, but his inconsistency combined with his lack of mental strength prevent the Nets from being really confident in him. If he’s to have a breakout year, this should be it because he’s not going to get too many more chances to show that he can be relied upon as a starter. Tony Battie is the main reserve power forward for this NJ team. He might not look it, but he’s a surprisingly good shooter who puts in the work and makes an impact with limited minutes given to him. He should be a welcomed surprise for this team that has had problems with front court depth for quite a while now.

New Jersey Nets Centers

Brook Lopez really impressed people around the league last year with his strong play right from the get go of his rookie year. He ended up leading all rookies in field goal percentage and blocks and was second in rebounds. He will have plenty of time to grow and officially cement his status as a top center in this league. Josh Boone is the main backup center and while is a good rebounded, he’s only 6’10 and has a horrific 37% FT % that he will need to work on if he wants to have a chance to touch the ball on the offensive end.

Best Case Scenario for the New Jersey Nets

There’s a potential 8th seed up for grabs for a surprise Eastern conference team, but for that team to be the Nets, some trades will need to be made. If they can somehow acquire a player like Boozer or Amare, then this team will have what it takes to become the 8th seed. But that is a huge IF.

Worst Case Scenario for the New Jersey Nets

The NJ Nets are a young and inexperienced team with a 26 year old PG in charge of carring and leading them. They lack depth and talent in the front court and way too much competition on the wings, if they don’t resolve this issue then they’re as safe bet for the lottery as you can find.

Nets 2010 Outlook

The Nets won’t make the playoffs, but the backcourt of Lee and Harris could prove to be a tandem with potential. Lopez as well is a solid young player for this team that should contribute for years to come. If Yi Jianlian develops and the Nets pick up another talented forward, then they could very well be on their way to the playoffs in a year or two.

New Jersey Nets 2010 Predictions

Record: 28-54

Surprise Player: Courtney Lee proving he’s couple years away from being a true All Star

Key Player: Yi Jianlian and whether he can be that solid contributor at the forward position that the Nets desperately need.

Background of 2009-2010 Charlotte Bobcats

The Charlotte Bobcats are the newest additions to the NBA and we all are aware that being an expansion team, it takes sometimes a decade or so until the team can really do something. Therefore, there’s no need to sugercoat the fact that the Bobcats won’t really be nothing more than a filler in this year’s NBA season. Their biggest highlight of last season was beating out the Lakers twice and being the only team to have a favourable series split against them. Another bonus, which might be considered a negative depending on where you stand on the matter, is having legends Larry Brown and Michael Jordan on the sidelines. These are two winners that will struggle with the idea of throwing in the towel before the season has even started. It seems however, that the Bobcats owner (same time BET owner) Robert Johnson has not only thrown in the towel, but given up completely on the franchise. He has openly admitted to having put the team on sale, and has already started liquidating this team with the trading of Okafor – who’s contract is 3 years longer than the lesser asset Tyson Chandler. To add insult to injury, or should I say to add injury to insult, Raja Bell, the team’s starting shooting guard will be out for at least 4 months with a torn ligament. Sometimes it’s not easy being the fan of a poorly managed NBA team.

Bobcats additions in 2010

Tyson Chandler

Ronald Murray

Gerald Henderson

Bobcats departures in 2010

Emeka Okafor

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Charlotte Bobcats

PG – Raymond Felton
SG – Gerald Henderson
SF – Gerald Wallace
PF – Boris Diaw
C – Tyson Chandler

Charlotte Bobcats Guards

Being signed to a long term deal, Raymond Felton has been trusted to be the leader of this team for years to come and at 25 years of age, he still has room to develop. He possesses a well rounded game both capable of distributing the ball efficiently as well as being able to get his on the offensive end of the floor. His backcourt starting mate was going to be Raja Bell, but a recent injury will see him out for the larger part of this season. I can’t say it’s not bad news, because as dedicated and hardworking of a player Raja is he’s 33 and will be closer to his 40s by the time the Bobcats do become a playoff team. In his place is 6’5 Duke guard Gerald Henderson. While we know that coach Larry Brown isn’t the biggest fan of rookies playing big minutes, this is one situation where he won’t have much of a choice. It will be interesting for the franchise to see what kind of player Henderson can become, and they will have the whole of this year to take a pretty good look. But don’t expect Henderson to see huge minutes, because Ronald Murray is a combo guard that can flat out play. He was a key player of the bench for the Atlanta Hawks, and even had stretches back in his Seattle Days where he would light up the scoreboard at will. Expect to see Murray fill up many minutes both at the PG and SG spot, with DJ Augustin collecting any of the breadcrumb minutes that he leaves.

Charlotte Bobcats Forwards

With the departure of Emeka Okafor, it will be on Gerald Wallace to take the role of franchise player. Wallace isn’t a household name, but in fact he’s as complete of a player as you will find in basketball. A monster of an athlete, a defensive hound capable of steals shutdowns and blocks, and a slasher to the basket able to rock the rim if not closely watched. He only lacks a consistent shooting touch and some finesse, but otherwise he’s just as effective on the floor as the Paul Pierces and Caron Butlers of this league. Vladimir Radmanovic serves as Wallace’s reserve and he is the polar opposite of what Wallace brings. Radmanovic is a real threat on the perimeter, as lethal as the best of them when he doesn’t start daydreaming in the middle of matches. The starting Power Forward position belongs to Boris Diaw, once a most improved player winner, on this team he will be counted as the leading scoring option. He’s European basketball upbringing combined with his size and agility makes an effective combo and most opposing teams have a hard time covering him. He’s developed his shooting touch over the last couple years and will need to have another breakout year if the Bobcats are to have any shot at the playoffs.Nazr Mohammed is really the only viable reserve to Diaw, so Diaw’s importance can’t be underestimated.

Charlotte Bobcats Centers

Tyson Chandler is the main new addition to this team, and it is unclear what the Bobcats can really expect from him. At 7’1 he holds more size and will have a better shot at guarding Eastern Conference top big men such as Dwight Howard and Shaquille O’Neal, but that is hardly what the Bobcats are concerned about. Without a player like Chris Paul, Chandler will need to work even harder on offensive rebounds and putbacks to make a difference on the offensive end. DeSagana Diop is the main insurance if Chandler is forced to sit out yet again due to injuries.

Best Case Scenario for the Charlotte Bobcats

If we have to be honest, there is no real best case scenario for the Bobcats. As daunting as this sounds, its unfortunately true. It’s hard doing well in this league when your owner is thinking how he can best sell off his team. Having said that, this team is somewhat led by the duo of Larry Brown and Michael Jordan – so the young players will stay organized, focus, and granted that a few of them flourish, this can be a team that can slowly rise out of rebuilding status.

Worst Case Scenario for the Charlotte Bobcats

I’m not really sure what’s worse than what I just described above. It could be that the team does so horribly that the team is relocated to some other part of the country.

Bobcats 2010 Outlook

The Bobcats will have to endure a long and tough season, and will hope to get a good couple of additions in next year’s draft.

Charlotte Bobcats 2010 Predictions

Record: 30-52

Surprise Player: Gerald Henderson developing into a fine player

Key Player: Tyson Chandler and whether he can stay healthy throughout the season

Background of 2009-2010 New Orleans Hornets

It’s hard to imagine what the New Orleans players must be feeling ahead of the 2009-2010 season. They certainly haven’t forgotten of the fact that they suffered THE biggest lopsided loss in NBA playoffs history and got absolutely annihiliated by the Denver Nuggets. You can bet for sure that Chris Paul will never forget about it, but how about the rest of his team? It seems the Hornets management weren’t too concerned as they shipped out key contributors Rasual Butler, Tyson Chandler, and Ryan Bowen and in exchange only really have Emeka Okafor to show for it. This will be a season where we find out the true value of Chris Paul. If he can manage to make this team compete against the Western Conference elite, then not giving him that all-elusive MVP award will be a crime against basketball.

Hornets additions in 2010

Emeka Okafor Ike Diogu Darius Songaila

Hornets departures in 2010

Tyson Chandler

Rasual Butler

Ryan Bowen

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 New Orleans Hornets

PG – Chris Paul

SG – Morris Peterson

SF – Peja Stojakovic

PF – David West

C – Emeka Okafor

New Orleans Hornets Guards

Chris Paul has been something of a stats monster in his first years in the NBA, but if you thought you’d seen all that he can do, then you’ll be in for a surpise this year. Chris Paul is a machine that needs no system, no coach, no real stars, and no motivation – he will perform miracles without those ‘details’. I’m pretty sure you can put Chris Paul in a team full of mindless drones and zombies and ran by a mentally challenged person and he still would be able to squeeze 20 wins out of them. This year his backups consist of an inexperienced duo of Bobby Brown and Darren Collison. The good news is that only around 8 minutes should be left for these two youngsters to share. With the departure of Rasual Butler, Morris Peterson will be relied on to lead the shooting guard position. At 32 years of age, Peterson isn’t exactly getting any better but he has the shooting ability, the bball IQ, and the experience of knowing how best to feed off of Paul’s skillset – which should allow him to do an ok job at the position. Devin Brown is the other reserve, and can manage to play the combo guard position giving some flexibiilty to coach Byron Scott. But as you can see, overall the backcourt of the New Orleans Hornets rests squarely on the shoulders of the 6’0 Chris Paul.

New Orleans Hornets Forwards

It wasn’t too long ago that Peja Stojakovic was considered one of the best small forwards in the league. Ok scratch that, it has been really ages since we’ve seen Peja light it up like we know he can. Injuries has played a key role in limiting his production, but at 32 years of age, akin to Peterson, he will need to find a way to not only stay healthy but be able to contribute to this team that has a very limited offensive arsenal. James Posey is the other 32 year old player on this team just past his prime. The Hornets picked him up from the then defending champion Boston Celtics for a hefty amount, and while he has contributed, it hasn’t been to the degree they have expected simply because Posey is not a star player on a average team. Posey is an excellent complimentary player on a championship level team. Julian Wright is a young promising player with a bright future, and the Hornets will hope that he can bring some agility and athleticsm to the otherwise very bland and slow wing players on this team. David West should just be entering his prime and will be expected to carry the main scoring load on this team. He might need to be even more aggresive than before and try to put somewhere around 25 points per game for this team to be competitive. Darius Songalia and Ike Diogu are able bodies that can provide brief relief to West, but won’t be game changers to say the least.

New Orleans Hornets Centers

Tyson Chandler’s career was saved by the arrival of Chris Paul, and Byron Scott will hope the same happens for once highly regarded prospect Emeka Okafor. To be honest, Emeka Okafor has a greater upside than Chandler did, but the screen and roll that Paul and Chandler had was a thing of beauty. Emeka Okafor’s contributions to the Hornets will come on the defensive end and he should be one of the top 3 centers in the conference. Hilton Armstrong is a great player to come off the bench, he’s always active and manages to make the most out of minutes handed to him. If he has improved over the off season, he should get some minutes both at the 4 and 5 positions.

Best Case Scenario for the New Orleans Hornets

When evaluating the New Orleans Hornets, we musn’t forget how they became a team to be feared just 2 seasons ago. It was really out of nowhere, and people doubted them through the very end. So I personally will not count this team out as long as Chris Paul is playing the way he is. They should make the playoffs without too many problems, and given that they are healthy and in form when the postseason arrives, they have as much shot advancing as the team with the home court advantage.

Worst Case Scenario for the New Orleans Hornets

Chris Paul’s quote during the offseason that even he could get traded did not bode well for the city of New Orleans. He certainly won’t be playing anywhere less than 100%, but the mentality of this team must somewhat be affected with the way this team has tried to shed salary cap space and practically give away some of the core players. New Orleans has got some old players who will need to find that second life in their career for New Orleans to avoid the kind of emberassment they suffered last year.

Hornets 2010 Outlook

The Hornets will finish 7th out West with another near MVP year from CP3. While not being completely swept away, they will be defeated by a much more ready 2nd seed team that’s got players thinking championships instead of whether they will get traded or not.

New Orleans Hornets 2010 Predictions

Record: 43-39

Surprise Player: Emeka Okafor will see a rise in his play play with floor leader Chris Paul and should get All-Star considerations

Key Player: Peja Stojakovic needs to be that long range bomber assasin again and take the load off of everyone on the offensive end.

That wraps up the New Orleans Hornets 2009-2010 season preview and our detailed look at the Hornets in the 2010 NBA season.

Background of 2009-2010 Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers are commonly known as the laughing stock of the NBA. Year after year (except for one), they fail to make the playoffs and the height of the excitement for Clippers fans is which number 1 pick they will select and completely screw up. This season, the name they have chosen is none other than Blake Griffin. He’s a smart, athletic, driven, and skilled player that could be the first actual Clippers high profile draft pick that ends up not sucking. The Clippers made the smart move of shipping Zach Randolph out of town, and have added complimentary pieces such as Rasual Butler and Sebastian Telfair. Add to that a healthy and motivated Baron Davis, and this could be the best Clippers team yet. Fans have finally something meaningful to get excited about.

Clippers additions in 2010

Blake Griffin

Rasual Butler

Sebastian Telfair

Clippers departures in 2010

Zach Randolph

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Los Angeles Clippers

PG – Baron Davis
SG – Eric Gordon
SF – Al Thornton
PF – Blake Griffin
C – Chris Kaman

Los Angeles Clippers Guards

Baron Davis has long been a favorite player of mine, and I still think that when he’s at his best, he’s the best point guard in the league. Having said that, B. Diddy hardly every plays to his potential whether it is his myriad of injuries, or just personal motivational factors. This season however he finally seems to to have his mind back in the game, and will be looking to become once again a top NBA point guard. If not then the pressure will be on Sebastian Telfair to pick up the slack and contribute to the levels that he’s been expected to as a Coney Island legend. Eric Gordon impressed coach Mike Dunleavy last year at the shooting guard spot, but the addition of Rasual Butler could provide interesting competition at the shooting guard spot. Butler last year was one of New Orleans’ lone consistent contributors and his strengths shooting the 3 and defending the perimeter will complement well alongside a Baron Davis that can create open shots for teammates and not exactly being a force on the defensive end. Perhaps Eric Gordon at 6’3 can play the role of combo guard to make some more room for Butler.

Los Angeles Clippers Forwards

The small forward position is cause for concern for many Clippers fans in the 2009-2010 season. Al Thornton is a promising player with the right skill set and athleticism to match, but his game decisions and performance on the court is not something you would bank your kids’ future on. Ricky Davis similarly is as skilled as backup SG/SF’s come, but he has too much interest jacking up shots and not enough interest playing a complete game. At least the Clippers can call upon Steve Novak if they need another 3 point shooter on the floor with both Griffin and Davis capable of commanding some extra attention on defense. The power forward position that previously belonged to team chemistry killer Zach Randolph, will now go to a complete opposite type of player in Blake Griffin. Griffin is the type of player who will play team basketball and will be a welcomed addition to a team that could use some more hustle and team chemistry.

Los Angeles Clippers Centers

The center position for the LA Clippers is among the best in the league. Chris Kaman is a double double machine and a workhorse to boot. Putting players like that next to a motivated Baron Davis could definitely be a recipe for success. Backing up Chris Kaman is now NBA veteran Marcus Camby. Let’s not forget that Camby is a previous All-Star and Defensive Player of the year, and fantasy basketball gurus will know exactly the type of impact that he’s capable of across the board. It seems like the Clippers front court is as strong as ever despite recent losses of Elton Brand and Zach Randolph.

Best Case Scenario for the LA Clippers

I’m sure there’s a joke somewhere with the title “Best Case Scenario for the LA Clippers”, but I think this season this is a team that will command some respect. The Western Conference is shaped that, this team has what it takes to make the playoffs. If they manage to get that 7th seed, then whoever is at the 2nd seed could feel some pressure akin to that Dallas Mavericks vs Golden States matchup first round matchup some years ago. This will be a promising year for the Clippers , and the beginning of their rise into significance.

Worst Case Scenario for the Los Angeles Clippers

Let’s not forget that we are talking about the Clippers for a second. Is the addition of a rookie and two backups enough to flip this team on its head and suddenly become a dynasty. Not exactly, and the rumors of Baron Davis being motivated and all that still remains a big IF. The Clippers will see another year in the lottery if this team doesn’t come full circle and start geling from the get go.

Clippers 2010 Outlook

The LA Clippers will sneak into the playoffs as the eight seed and face off against their neighbor and defending champion LA Lakers. It will be a short, albeit entertaining, series that can give this team in development something to motivate themselves for the years ahead.

LA Clippers 2010 Predictions

Record: 41-41

Surprise Player: Rasual Butler becoming an integral part of this Clippers team and filling the gaps at the 2 and 3 spots.

Key Player: Baron Davis and if he can get back to the form that helped carry the Warriors to that special post season run

Background of 2009-2010 Miami Heat

The Miami Heat have the third best basketball player on the planet today, so straight off the bat the Heat are a team that no team can take lightly. The Miami Heat proved that they are one of the East’s best teams in 2009, with a swift turnaround from a disastrous prior season. They are hoping to build on this and take the next step to become championship contenders. This will be no easy feat, but the Heat don’t have the luxury of waiting around with Dwyane Wade becoming a free agent next year and despite some indications that he would like to stay, it will all depend on how well the Heat fare this year in the playoffs. Heat GM Pat Riley was close to making some big moves that would have brought in Carlos Boozer and Lamar Odom, and would have made the Heat instant contenders, but his plans fell through. Instead Heat fans will have to settle with an offseason that saw Beasley go to rehab, and Quentin Richardson and Carlos Arroyo being the only additions.

Heat additions in 2010

Quentin Richardson

Carlos Arroyo

Heat departures in 2010

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Miami Heat

PG – Mario Chalmers
SG – Dwyane Wade
SF – Michael Beasley
PF – Udonis Haslem
C – Jermaine O’Neal

Miami Heat Guards

Dwyane Wade was the runner MVP last season, and if people are expecting him to drop off, they will be in for a surprise. After a full healthy season and the off season to take a nice rest, Wade should be able to land his first MVP title given that the Heat win enough games. As far as starting point guards go, Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo will be in a nice dogfight to claim that position for themself. Chalmers has the upside, but Arroyo is a proven starting PG that will fit in well and see some minutes. Daequan Cook and Quentin Richardson will have to battle it out for the limited minutes as Wade’s reserve. Both players are capable of knocking it down beyond the arc, with Cook having the advantage of being more familiar with the system and being more in shape.

Miami Heat Forwards

The biggest question surrounding Miami Heat’s frontcourt is obviously Mr. Michael Beasley, the second round pick of last year’s draft. He was facing life problems that spilled on to the media through his Twitter account, and he spent a good part of the summer in rehabilitation. The Heat will need Beasley to become a driving force on this team and help shoulder the scoring load that Wade has been asked to carry for so long. The only other alternatives at the small forward spot is veteran James Jones and up and coming player Dorell Wright. Dorell has shown flashes of what he can do, but needs to polish his game more if he’s aiming to see increased minutes. Udonis Haslem holds down the fort at the 4 spot and will have another strong season and go largely unnoticed. Joel Anthony is 6’9 but played big minutes last year at the PF and C positions with the Heat facing injuries. A lot of analysts and Heat fans rate the recently discovered 27 year old quite highly, and we should see strong contributions from him off the bench.

Miami Heat Centers

Jermaine O’Neal at one point in his career was being compared to the likes of Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, and Tim Duncan. Today he is a shadow of his former self, but still more than a capable starting center able to compete against Eastern Conference elite big men like Garnett, Shaq,Dwight Howard. If JO happens to injure himself again, then Jamal Magloire will be counted on to guard the paint. Having been an All-Star himself, Magloire is a good backup center option to have.

Best Case Scenario for the Miami Heat

Honestly the best case for the Miami Heat to trade for Carlos Boozer during the season and give one of the Eastern Conference Big 3 a decent challenge. If they do so then the Heat might get Wade back and have a chance to develop their young starters such as Chalmers and Beasley while looking for some more pieces that could make this team a championship contender in future years.

Worst Case Scenario for the Miami Heat

The East has gotten more competitive this year with the Wizards,Raptors,76ers,Bulls, and Hawks all at least as likely to make the playoffs as the Heat. If Beasley doesn’t step it up a level, and Jermaine O’Neal doesn’t give a productive season, this team will not make the playoffs and Wade will be on the market making this team go back to rebuilding mode.

Heat 2010 Outlook

The Heat will sneak into the playoffs due in large part to constant Wade heroics. A first round exit will ensue after facing off against the Eastern Conference elites.

Miami Heat 2010 Predictions

Record: 43-39

Surprise Player: Michael Beasley bouncing back from tough times for an All-Star worthy season

Key Player: Jermaine O’Neal and whether he can stay healthy and have an impact.

That wraps up the Miami Heat 2009-2010 season preview and our detailed look at the Heat in the 2010 NBA season.

Background of 2009-2010 Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks couple years ago were one of the safest bets to hit the lottery, the draft lottery that is. But over the past couple of years along with Coach Mike Woodson and the arrival of Joe Johnson this team has proven itself to be an elite Eastern Conference team. However the playoffs haven’t been all that kind to them, and they were first hit by injuries and then swept aside by the Cavaliers. For this team making the playoffs is no longer a goal but a must, and true success will only be achieved by at the very least making the Eastern Conference Finals. It’s no easy task and besides the maturing of their still developing front court of Marvin Williams, Josh Smith and Al Horford the only additions have been high scoring guard Jamal Crawford and veteran power forward Joe Smith. The question will be whether it’s enough to challenge the Eastern Conference Big 3.

Probably Starting Lineup for the 2009 2010 Atlanta Hawks

PG – Mike Bibby
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Marvin Williams
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford

Atlanta Hawks Guards

The Atlanta Hawks have unquestionably one of the best backcourts in the Association. Mike Bibby might be getting close to his twilight years, but can still consistently give you 15 and 5 while providing stability and clutch in late game situations. Joe Johnson meanwhile would be a superstar if it wasn’t for freaky players like Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade at the same position stealing his thunder. Jamal Crawford will be the Hawks’ main threat off the bench, and he’s quite a luxury to have. Ronald Murray might have had career season last year but Jamal Crawford is on an other level. If he can fit in well as a bench player and accept that role, he will be the exact player that the Hawks needed to take the scoring responsibilities when either Mike Bibby or Joe Johnson take a breather. The Hawks’ 19th pick this year Jeff Teague can see some minutes at the point given that he’s a well rounded player and not many other backups are present.

Atlanta Hawks Forwards

At 6’9 and only 23 years of age, Marvin Williams is certainly still a project in the making. But it’s also time he starts showing abit more than he has so far in his young career. Sure he’s suffered some injuries which might have held him back, but this year the Hawks will need him to be a force a the small forward position. LeBron James and Paul Pierce will be players he will need to face and there’s no doubt that he’s going to have to be the top of his game not to be a huge liability in those matchups. At the power forward position for the Hawks, Josh Smith similarly faces some question about his destiny in this league. I would consider him the most athletic player in the league, but he needs to establish himself beyond that as a true ballplayer capable of impacting games on a consistent basis. He’s main problem is his jumpshot and basketball IQ – both areas that don’t have overnight solutions. Joe Smith is a good player to have on your bench, he’s seen it all now and will be a reliable defensive body in the playoffs if Josh Smith zones out of the game. Maurice Evans is another athletic player that can be relied on – he’s quite similar to Williams in athleticism but his proficiency lies more on the defensive end.

Atlanta Hawks Centers

At 6’10 Al Horford is the Haws’ main center and will see most of the minutes. He’s another young player that has experience injuries early on in his career, and he will be hoping to play a full season this year and become more of a low post presence. Zaza Pachulia is a half decent reserve for him that will battle it out when hes out there and can even shadow as a starting center if more injuries hit this unlucky Hawks team.

Best Case Scenario for the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks will need alot of their ‘promising’ players to start holding their end of the promise. If this happens and Jamal Crawford can make the transition to an effective 6th man, then this team can surprise a Big 3 team give the right dose of luck.

Worst Case Scenario for the Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks’ biggest weaknesses were at that 3 and 5 spot, especially with recent injuries to those players and the fact that nothing much has been done to comfort those concerns is alarming. Jamal Crawford might be a better player than Murray but it will be hard for him to be more efficient than him. All this would lead you to think that the Hawks haven’t improved enough this offseason to do much better than what they did last season.

Hawks 2010 Outlook

Hawks should finish fourth through sixth depending on their health. If they can get the 4th seed they will be in the same situation as last year facing a title contender in the second round and they should do slightly better but hardly enough to force an upset.

Atlanta Hawks 2010 Predictions

Record: 47-35

Surprise Player: Jamal Crawford doing a decent impression at the 6th man position

Key Player: Josh Smith’s time to prove he’s more than an athletic specimen has come

Background of 2009-2010 Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls nearly pulled one of the biggest upsets in Playoff history by almost upstaging the then NBA Champion Boston Celtics. Sure, the Celtics were a shadow of their former self but some of the performances by these young Bull players were otherworldly. Derrick Rose had the best first playoff game out of any PG in the history of the NBA, and despite dropping a level after that, still had a very promising series facing up against Rajon Rondo. Joakim Noah, John Salmons, Tyrus Thomas, Brad Miller, Kirk Hinrich were stellar throughout the series and more than stood their ground against a tough, gritty, and veteran Celtics team. One player you can’t go without mentioning is Ben Gordon. He was the star player of this team and always was ready to take the big shots when the team needed him to, and converted on a surprisingly high percentage. Losing him to Detroit was a big loss, but GM John Paxson pulled a rabbit out of a hat, or out of Europe more specifically, when he signed Jannero Pargo to the team. With Luol Deng back healthy and the taste of playoffs excitement still in their mouth, the Bulls will be hungry for more success and actually expecting it.

PF – Joakim Noah

Chicago Bulls Guards

Derrick Rose has had some problems off the court recently with claims that he had someone else take his SAT exam to enter Memphis University. He will need to put all that behind him and focus on being the clear leader of this team, both as a floor general and as the goto player at the end of games. John Salmons is an interesting player at the 2 spot, and is probably the most underrated shooting guard in the League. This is a guy that can and has in the past totally shutdown Kobe Bryant. He’s also quite effective on the offensive end when he really wants it. As the backup point guard, Kirk Hinrich is quite a luxury and something coach skiles probably loves to have with his knowledge of the importance of point guards. Hinrich could have been starting for many teams this year but he will instead provide backup for the 2 guard positions and be the team’s main spark off the bench. Speaking of spark, Jannero Pargo is an absolute monster when it comes to lighting it up on demand. Fans who have watched him closely in his days in New Orleans will know very well just how ridiculously hot this guy could get in the split of a second, there were times he was as effective as Chris Paul out on the floor – he won’t fill Ben Gordon’s shoes exactly but for less than 2 million dollars its as close as you’re going to get.

Chicago Bulls Forwards

There was a time when Luol Deng was regarded as a surefire All-Star, but with a combination of injuries and contract issues he has never developed into the beast of a player that he’s athletically gifted to be. This should be the season where he makes one big effort to make some noise in this league. Joakim Noah might play some minutes at the four this year after showing a better than expected all around game in the playoffs last year against the Celtics. He’s a workhorse and a player who’s hustle is contagious. Tyrus Thomas will be another energy player off the bench and should be playing large minutes at the 4 spot. He was always regarded as a player that could do wonders if his basketball IQ was higher, and we did see some flashes of that towards the end of last season.

Chicago Bulls Centers

Brad Miller is a boring but steady center for the Bulls, and there’s no risks when you’re playing with him. He’s gonna give you a near double double and knock down open shots each and every night without exception. Noah will play some minutes at the 5 too so that leaves limited minutes for reserves Aaron Gray and Jerome James to contend for – probably a good news in the eyes of Bulls fans.

Best Case Scenario for the Chicago Bulls

After witnessing a near Boston upset in the first round last year, NBA teams will be more ready for what the Bulls are capable of. If Derrick Rose progresses as a true leader, and Luol Deng finds back his star form – this team is going to give any team in the East a good scare, whoever they get matched up against. If they manage to get the 4th spot, then they can see the second round, if not then another exciting first round matchup awaits us.

Worst Case Scenario for the Chicago Bulls

The Bulls are rather lacking in big men and this was apparent even last year when lesser players such as Kendrick Perkins and even Big Baby Davis were manhandling them on the boards. Furthermore, they really lack a low post scoring option which it seems like they’ve been looking for years. They simply don’t have a decent shot to defeat any of the Big 3 when they’re healthy – but if a scenario such as last years presents itself again, they might have a chance to upset.

Bulls 2010 Outlook

A first round exit looks inevitable for this team. The important thing for the Bulls in 2010 will be for Derrick Rose’s maturity and leadership to evolve and to declare himself as a true All-Star. Luol Deng and Tyrus Thomas will also be important areas of development this year and a solid showing by both those guys will give renewed faith to this Bulls organization. But without an addition like Carlos Boozer, this team will finish the season around 5-7 and see dejavu all over again.

Chicago Bulls 2010 Predictions

Record: 45-37

Surprise Player: Jannero Pargo being the Jason Terry of the Chicago Bulls

Key Player: Derrick Rose’s evolution from ROY into bonafide All-Star
